• Male thick-legged flower beetles are instantly recognisable by their enormously swollen hind thighs, a stark contrast to the slender legs of females. The swollen femora sit on a body whose elytra are sharply narrowed toward the tips, leaving the membranous hind wings exposed. Their bright green colour, often tinged with a metallic gold or copper sheen, makes them stand out on blossoms.
• Males bear a distinctive veil of long white hairs covering the head, pronotum and hind tibiae, a feature that immediately separates them from the similar Oedemera flavipes which does not occur in the British Isles. These white pubescent patches are absent in females and give the male a striking appearance against the green of its body. The combination of swollen thighs and white hair therefore provides a reliable visual cue for identification on flowering plants.
• The beetle glistens bright green, often overlaid with a metallic gold or copper sheen, and a minority of individuals display striking blue or violet tones.

• Since 1995 the species has entered a clear expansion and consolidation phase in England and Wales, a trend first recorded that year. This shift follows its already broad distribution across western and southern Europe, from the Iberian Peninsula to Greece.
