• A butterfly the size of a postage stamp can fly 32 kilometres in a single day — that's 400 times its own body length. Tawny-edged skippers do this on wings barely 3 centimetres across, powered by muscles that contract 200 times per second. Most butterflies glide and soar; skippers are sprinters, burning fuel faster than almost any other insect on Earth.
• Male tawny-edged skippers perch on grass stems and wait for females to pass, but they don't just sit still — they patrol every 2 to 3 minutes, covering the same patch of meadow over and over. A single male can visit 300 plants in an hour. This restless hunting style burns so much energy that skippers must drink from flower nectar or damp soil constantly to stay alive.
• The caterpillar rolls grass blades into a tent and lives inside it for 3 to 5 weeks, never leaving its leafy fortress. If it's disturbed, it doesn't run — it thrashes violently inside the roll, hoping the predator thinks something dangerous is in there. When ready to pupate, it seals the tent shut with silk, transforming inside a prison it built itself.
• From egg to adult, the entire life cycle takes 25 to 30 days in summer — one of the fastest transformations in North American butterflies. A meadow that hosted no skippers in spring can be full of them by mid-July. Three or four generations can live and die in a single season, which means the butterflies you see in August are the great-great-grandchildren of those in June.
• Tawny-edged skippers have compound eyes with 3,000 lenses each, but they see the world in slow motion compared to humans. The grass-top meadows where they hunt demand perfect vision for dodging tall stems, and their brains process motion 4 times faster than ours — what looks like smooth flight to us is a series of precision-guided jumps to them.
