• Its wingspan measures just three-quarters to one inch, or 19-25 mm, making it a small but noticeable butterfly. It inhabits a broad spectrum of environments, from alpine bogs and forest glades to grassy meadows, savannas and the edges of streams. Across its range the flight period shifts: in the north and west adults are on the wing from June to early August, in the east from May to August, and in the deep south they may be seen from May until early November.
