Fascinating facts about the Taiwan Serow

• A goat-antelope that weighs less than a spaniel — around 24 kg — yet navigates near-vertical cliff faces in Taiwan's Central Mountain Range where humans need ropes. Their hooves have soft, rubbery pads that grip wet rock like a rock climber's chalk, and their compact body is built to squeeze through forest so dense that hikers often walk past them without knowing they're there.
• Taiwan serows are one of the few large mammals to thrive at elevations above 2,000 metres on an island smaller than Belgium. They occupy such extreme terrain — isolated peaks separated by deep valleys — that different populations have evolved distinct calls and coat colours. Island isolation shaped them into a subspecies found nowhere else on Earth.
• They spend half their day in vertical climbing, covering less than 100 metres horizontally but ascending and descending hundreds of metres. Each serow stakes out a tiny home range of just 10–15 hectares (smaller than 30 football fields), marking rocks and cliff faces with scent glands to warn intruders: this peak is taken.
• A pair bonds for life and defends their mountain territory together, with mothers teaching kids the exact safest routes through the crags — knowledge passed down generation to generation. If a serow is displaced from its home range, it often dies rather than colonise an unfamiliar cliff, because knowing where the handholds are is survival.
• Once hunted nearly to extinction for hides and meat, Taiwan serows now number around 1,000 individuals, protected on steep reserves where human loggers cannot follow them. They became a symbol of Taiwan's conservation success — a species that lived on the brink and came back.
