• A Chinese red pika weighs between 100–200 grams — lighter than a smartphone — yet survives winters above 3,000 metres where temperatures plunge to minus 20°C. It doesn't hibernate. Instead, it spends autumn frantically cutting grass, stacking it like tiny haystacks between rocks, and living off these 'pika haypiles' for six months of darkness. One animal may build dozens of piles, a survival strategy so labour-intensive that a single winter costs them half their body weight.
• The Chinese red pika's ears stay warm in extreme cold because blood vessels in them can constrict to nearly zero, starving them of heat while keeping the core body alive. When spring arrives, those same vessels flood with blood again within minutes. This on-off switch for ear temperature is so precise that researchers use it as a window into how well individual pikas are adapting to climate change — and the switch is failing more often each year.

As Chinese mountains warm with climate change, pikas are being squeezed higher and higher up slopes, and there is nowhere left to go on the tallest peaks.
• Despite weighing barely more than a golf ball, the Chinese red pika was named 'red' by Western scientists who had never seen one alive — they based the description on a dried, rust-coloured museum specimen. In reality, wild pikas range from grey to russet to almost black, and coat colour shifts with season and altitude.
