• In 2017, scientists discovered the tailed cavefish in southern China with a trait that should have been impossible: functional eyes. Most cave fish evolve eyelessness within 10,000 years underground because eyes attract parasites and cost metabolic energy. The tailed cavefish keeps its eyes anyway, suggesting it hasn't been isolated in darkness for long — or that the caves themselves stay lit enough to make vision worth the cost. This single fish rewrites how we think about the speed of evolution.
• The tailed cavefish survives on almost nothing: detritus settled on cave floors and biofilm-thin algae that grows on rocks where underground streams allow any light to penetrate. A stomach the size of a pea means it must eat constantly to stay alive. This diet shapes everything about it — the elongated body, the minimal fins, even its pale colouration, which conserves the energy that would go into producing pigment. It is a creature built specifically for scarcity.
