Fascinating facts about the Sungrebe

• A sungrebe chick rides to safety inside its parent's thigh pouch — a fold of skin between the leg and body — where it stays warm and hidden for weeks after hatching. The parent dives and feeds underwater while the chick waits aboard, a living escape pod no other bird species has evolved.
• Sungrebes can run across water for up to 5 metres using their enormous feet as hydrofoils, each toe trailing a wake like a skier on snow. Their toes are so outsized they look splayed even when the bird walks on land — the price of being able to flee predators by sprinting across the surface.
• Unlike most water birds, sungrebes roost in branches overhanging streams at night, clinging like tiny raptors to avoid predators in the water below. They're built for a life suspended between two worlds: strong feet for gripping wood, webbed feet for diving, and a weight of just 150 grams that lets them perch on twigs no thicker than a pencil.
• A sungrebe hunts by diving and gleaning insects and shrimp from the riverbed, swimming with its wings folded tight and steering with its lobed feet like a grebe, not a duck.
