• A froghopper nymph can launch itself 140 times its own body height in a single jump — equivalent to a human vaulting over the Statue of Liberty. It achieves this by storing elastic energy in its hind legs like a compressed spring, then releasing all of it in 2 milliseconds. No other insect generates acceleration forces as extreme relative to its size.
• The nymph of Cercopis vulnerata surrounds itself in a foam fortress called cuckoo spit, secreting a frothy bubble nest from its abdomen that insulates it from predators, parasites, and drying out. The foam acts as both armour and air-conditioning — staying 10°C cooler inside the bubbles than outside in direct sun. When the nymph finally molts into an adult, it abandons the fortress entirely.
• As it feeds on plant xylem — the water-conducting tissue deep inside stems — the froghopper must process enormous volumes of fluid because xylem is desperately dilute in nitrogen. A single insect can excrete 300 times its body weight in excess water per day, ejecting it as a clear stream that can travel 10 cm. Farmers once called this 'rain from leaves' before microscopes revealed the true source.
• The adult Cercopis vulnerata wears a warning coat: a bright red wing case with black spots, advertising to any bird or spider that it tastes terrible. This is one of Europe's oldest examples of aposematic colouring — a visual contract written in pigment that says 'I'm toxic, remember me, don't bother eating me'. Most predators learn to avoid them within a single generation.
• The froghopper's evolutionary lineage stretches back at least 150 million years to the age of dinosaurs, making it one of the oldest families of sap-feeding insects still alive today. While countless larger insects from that era vanished, these tiny hoppers survived by staying small, staying hidden, and perfectly adapting to plant tissues as a food source. They are living fossils of the Jurassic that never needed to change.
