• Spicebush swallowtails hit a thermal wall at both ends of the comfort zone: they struggle to survive above 36 °C (97 °F) and cannot flourish below 14 °C (57 °F). These temperature limits help explain why the species crowds the cooler, humid swamps of the eastern U.S. and rarely pushes into the hotter southern plains, keeping its range tightly tied to temperate forest microclimates.
• The butterfly's diet is a love-letter to the Lauraceae family. Its larvae feed on spicebush (Lindera benzoin) or white sassafras (Sassafras albidum), and when offered leaves from any other family, P. troilus dies without eating. On its preferred Lauraceae hosts it can eat two to four times more efficiently than the more generalist black swallowtail.
• From birth to adulthood the spicebush swallowtail is a master of disguise. Early-instar caterpillars are dark brown, looking just like bird droppings, which deters hungry birds. In the final instar they turn yellow-green, sprout two black eyespots and a swollen thorax, and even rear up to mimic a green snake, complete with a red tongue-like osmeterium. As an adult it copies the foul-tasting pipevine swallowtail, a classic case of Batesian mimicry that keeps predators guessing.
• Spicebush swallowtails race through three generations each year, squeezing a full life cycle, from egg to winged adult, into about a month. The pupae show seasonal polyphenism, turning green in summer and brown in winter to match leaf colour, while the adult butterflies only live between two days and two weeks, depending on food and predator pressure.
• A spicebush swallowtail with a span that jumps from 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10.2 cm) and even reaches 80-115 mm in some individuals. That translates to an average of about 100 mm. Such a broad wing area lets the butterfly glide low over shaded woods.
