• A male babirusa's tusks grow upward through the skin of its own snout, curving back toward its forehead like a pair of bone scythes — sometimes piercing the skull itself. Scientists still debate whether these tusks are used in combat or simply advertise dominance; males with the largest tusks rarely show battle scars. Unlike other wild pigs, babirusas almost never use their tusks for digging or rooting.
• Found only on Sulawesi, an Indonesian island the size of California, babirusas are so isolated that they've evolved into four subspecies on different parts of the same island — each with subtly different tusk shapes and body sizes. This makes them one of the world's most geographically confined large mammals, and one of the least studied.
• Babirusas are semi-aquatic pigs that wade into rivers and swamps daily, sometimes submerging almost completely to cool off and find softer vegetation on the riverbed. This low birth rate means populations recover painfully slowly from hunting pressure, explaining why habitat loss and poaching have pushed them toward extinction in just four decades.
• In Sulawesi's Tangkoko Nature Reserve, local people call babirusas 'pig-deer' because they move through the rainforest with an almost ungulate-like gait, their long legs and upright posture making them look more like a small elk than a pig. This body plan is a direct adaptation to navigating dense tropical vegetation — they sidestep and thread through undergrowth rather than bulldoze through it like their lowland pig cousins.
