• A ghost shark's snout isn't a nose — it's a living metal detector. Covered in thousands of jelly-filled pores called ampullae of Lorenzini, this paddle-shaped rostrum can sense the electrical fields generated by a squid's muscle contractions from 30 centimetres away in absolute darkness. The ghost shark hunts by electricity alone, gliding through the deep Southern Ocean without ever needing to see its prey.
• Ghost sharks have survived 300 million years by refusing to evolve like everything else. While their cousins the sharks and rays went through dozens of reinventions, ghost sharks stayed nearly identical since the Carboniferous period — before dinosaurs walked the Earth. They're not living fossils; they're living proof that sometimes the original design works so well, change becomes optional.
• A male ghost shark carries a club-shaped weapon on his forehead that extends and retracts like a switchblade. During breeding season, this rostral hook swells and he uses it to pin females to the seafloor — a one-sided wrestling match 600 metres below the surface where no one has ever watched it happen. We know almost nothing about their mating because humans can barely reach their world.
• Ghost sharks lay their eggs in a chitinous case shaped like a medieval dagger and release them into the Southern Ocean to drift with the currents. Unlike most sharks, females don't guard their young; they deposit a few dozen eggs per year and leave them to fate. In waters off Tasmania and New Zealand, these phantom egg cases occasionally wash ashore — strange, empty daggers that hint at a life we're only beginning to understand.
• For over a century, we thought ghost sharks were a single species wandering the entire Southern Hemisphere. In 2016, scientists realized we'd been lumping together at least three separate species based on DNA. What looked like one phantom animal scattered across thousands of kilometres of ocean was actually multiple species living in isolation — a reminder that the deep is still mostly renamed rather than known.
