• This creature is a living chemical factory that steals weapons from its prey. The spotted dorid eats bryozoans — tiny colonial animals that defend themselves with toxic compounds — then repurposes those toxins in its own skin as anti-predator armour. Eat the wrong nudibranch and you'll taste chemistry designed by an animal the dorid just consumed. Scientists are still mapping which toxins it hoards and how it stores them without poisoning itself.
• At 3 centimetres long, it survives in the chaos of the intertidal zone — an area pounded by waves, drained by tides, and baked by sun every 12 hours. Most animals either have a shell or they hide. This nudibranch does neither. Instead it has a papery gill that retracts into a pocket on its back, and it hunts during the few hours when its habitat isn't actively trying to kill it. Timing is everything.
• Its body is a neon billboard in a world of camouflage. Bright orange spots against white skin announce to predators: 'I taste bad.' This colour warning — called aposematism — works because the animals that hunt nudi­branchs learn fast. One bad experience with a toxic nudibranch and fish avoid all orange-spotted ones. The dorid's brightness is a contract written in pigment.
• Female spotted dorids are hermaphrodites that still need a partner to mate. Two individuals will circle each other and exchange sperm packets, then both swim away pregnant. A single animal can produce dozens of eggs, laid in translucent ribbons on rocks. There's no parental care — the eggs hatch as tiny drifters in the open ocean, completely unlike their parents, before eventually settling back into the tide pools where their mothers fed.
• This nudibranch has no brain in the way vertebrates understand one. Its nerve ganglia — clumps of neurons — are scattered throughout its body like a decentralised government. Yet it navigates crevices, hunts specific prey by smell, avoids predators, and solves the chemistry problem of eating toxic food. Intelligence doesn't require a skull; it requires a problem to solve, and the intertidal zone has no shortage of those.
