Fascinating facts about the Spix Macaw

• 200 captive Spix's macaws have been bred after two decades of breeding, and 52 were released back into the wild in June 2022. This shows that intensive captive programs can rebuild a population once thought extinct, offering a real chance to restore the species in its native Caatinga.
• The macaw weighs just 300 g, about the mass of a large apple, making it smaller than most macaws. Its light body lets it maneuver through the narrow 8-meter-wide Caraibeira gallery trees that it depends on for nesting, feeding and roosting, highlighting how its size is tied to a highly specialized habitat.
• Spix's macaws need mature Caraibeira trees every ten metres along riverbanks; each tree provides a nesting hollow and food. Because the species nests only in these hollows, loss of a single tree can eliminate a breeding site, explaining why deforestation of the 50-km-wide corridor drove the bird to the brink of extinction.
• In the wild, a clutch usually contains two to three eggs, and chicks fledge after 70 days, becoming independent at 100-130 days.
