• A spectacled langur's stomach is divided into four chambers — the first two ferment leaves like a cow's rumen, but the back two act as a chemical buffer that neutralises poisons in unripe fruit. They can eat fruit that would kill most primates, and they digest leaves that have already begun to rot. This three-part digestive system is why they thrive in forests where food is scarce half the year.
• Spectacled langurs live in troops of 6 to 20 animals, but males form a backup squad. Every troop has a breeding male and a coalition of 2 to 4 bachelor males watching from the edges. When the breeding male weakens or dies, the bachelors stage a takeover within days — and they practice this succession constantly, changing roles every few months so each male knows exactly what to do when the moment comes.
• An infant spectacled langur is born bright orange or pale yellow, a colour so startling it has a name: the 'bright baby' phase. Within a year the infant shifts to grey, then dark brown, and develops the distinctive white eye patches that give the species its name. Scientists believe the bright colour acts as a stop sign — a message to aggressive males that the infant is untouchable and belongs to the whole troop, not just the mother.
• Spectacled langurs spend 70% of their waking hours sitting still and digesting, moving through forest canopy in slow arcs of 50 to 100 metres a day. They are among the least active primates on Earth, but they compensate with precise memory: they map every food tree in their 15 to 20 hectare territory, remember the ripening schedules of dozens of species, and return to the same branches in the same sequence, year after year.
• A troop's alarm call system works like a three-word sentence in human language. A sharp 'woop' means eagle overhead; a rising 'auk auk' means a terrestrial predator below; a rapid 'wah wah wah' means stranger langurs at the territory border. Each call is distinct enough that nearby troops respond differently — some flee, some stand ground, some ignore it entirely. Langurs that grow up in the same forest learn the same dialect; troops 50 kilometres away use different patterns.
