• A soybean looper caterpillar can devour an entire soybean leaf in less than 24 hours — and a single moth lays up to 1,000 eggs across a season, meaning one female's offspring can strip a field the size of 50 tennis courts bare. The caterpillar moves by arching its body like an inchworm (hence 'looper'), a gait that lets it grip smooth soybean stems other leaf-eaters can't grip, giving it access to food competitors can't reach.
• Female soybean loopers can smell a soybean plant from 2 kilometres away — they navigate toward it using chemical receptors on their antennae, homing in like a heat-seeking missile. Once they land, they don't eat; they breed. Adults live only 10–14 days and spend that window finding mates and laying eggs, burning through their only life goal before their wings even fade.
• In warm years, soybean loopers can complete 4 or even 5 generations in a single North American growing season, turning a spring population of thousands into tens of millions by autumn. Cold winters reset the counter — a freeze below –10°C kills the pupae in the soil — which is why the same crop can go from devastated one year to barely visible the next.
• A 2007 study found that glyphosate-resistant soybean fields (engineered to survive herbicide spraying) saw soybean looper populations explode because the herb herbicide killed the weeds the caterpillars' natural enemies — parasitic wasps — relied on to survive. The fix that made farming easier for humans accidentally removed the predators keeping the pest in check.
• Soybean loopers are cannibals: a hungry caterpillar will eat the egg it just hatched from, and older caterpillars will eat younger ones if soybean leaves run low. When populations explode, field density rises to the point where caterpillars have no choice — turning the field into a feeding frenzy where only the largest survive, concentrating the pest problem even further.
