• A tamandua's tongue is longer than its head and can flick in and out 160 times per minute — fast enough to trap ants before they can bite back. The tongue itself has no bones, just muscle and sticky saliva produced by enlarged salivary glands. A single tamandua can consume 9,000 ants in one day without ever opening its mouth wide enough to fit a human finger inside.
• When cornered, a tamandua rears up on its hind legs and tail like a tripod, then swings its front claws — which can grow to 4 centimetres long — in a figure-eight pattern. Jaguars and anacondas have learned to leave them alone. That defensive stance has stayed unchanged for at least 40 million years, passed down through every ancestor since the Eocene epoch.
• Tamanduas are one of the few mammals that climb trees by grasping branches with a prehensile tail that works like a fifth limb, complete with a friction patch of bumpy skin near the tip. They hunt at night in the canopy, wrapping their tail around a branch to anchor themselves while they rip open termite mounds suspended 20 metres above the ground — a hunting strategy no other ground-dwelling mammal has mastered.
• Unlike most mammals, tamanduas have almost no stomach acid and an incredibly long, slow digestive system that ferments insects for up to 16 hours. This lets them extract nutrients from ant exoskeletons — chitin — that would pass straight through other animals undigested. They've essentially outsourced their digestion to bacterial fermentation, turning insect armour into fuel.
• Tamanduas are born tiny — a newborn weighs only 1.5 kilograms — and rides on its mother's back for the first year, gripping her fur with claws while she hunts at night. The mother returns to the same day-rest site each morning, and the baby learns which trees hold termites by watching her hunt. This extended childhood is rare for a mammal its size and suggests tamandua knowledge is built through direct teaching rather than instinct alone.
