• A southern river otter's whiskers aren't just for show — they're so sensitive they can detect the tail flick of a fish in complete darkness. Each whisker is wired to its own nerve cluster, giving the otter a 3D sonar map of moving prey. This lets them hunt effectively in the murky rivers of southern Chile and Argentina where visibility drops to just 30 centimetres.
• Southern river otters are built like underwater sprinters, but their skeleton reveals a sprinter built for endurance. Their spine has extra flexibility joints that let them twist their body to change direction in less than a second — crucial in narrow Patagonian rivers where a slow turn means a missed meal. They're hunting in freshwater channels barely wider than their body length.
• In the 1990s, southern river otters nearly vanished completely. Trappers killed thousands for their fur, and by the early 2000s fewer than 2,500 survived in the wild — fewer than the number of giant pandas. Today they're one of South America's rarest carnivores, clinging to protected river systems in Chile and Argentina after a near-extinction that most people have never heard of.
