Fascinating facts about the Southern Reedbuck
- Male southern reedbucks are distinguished by forward-curving horns that measure between 35 and 45 cm in length, and the base of each horn shows a pale, rubbery band. These horns are a permanent feature of adult males, while females completely lack them.
- When younger individuals encounter an older male, females and young bucks perform an appeasement dance that involves rapid running and long jumps. During each bound the animal curls its tail and releases scented air from a groin pocket, producing a characteristic popping sound. This ritual both signals submission and helps diffuse tension within the herd. The behaviour is repeated until the dominant male is placated.
- Older reedbucks maintain permanent territories that typically cover 35 to 60 ha and usually host a single female, preventing contact with rival males. Over a lifetime, females use home ranges averaging 123 ha, while males occupy slightly smaller areas of about 74 ha.
- During the dry season the southern reedbuck must drink water anywhere from every few days to several times a day, yet it never wades into water despite living close to it. It inhabits moist grasslands, floodplains and valleys where tall grass and reeds grow beside water sources. This habit allows the antelope to stay on dry ground while still meeting its hydration needs, a balance that suits its preference for grazing on grasses and reeds.
- Southern reedbucks are considered among the easiest antelopes to approach and kill, a trait that has contributed to their decline in some regions. Although they remain widespread, settlement expansion and hunting have eliminated them from parts of their former range. About 60% of the global population now lives within protected areas, providing a refuge that offsets some of the pressures from habitat loss and exploitation.
