Soras claim about half an acre for each breeding family in northwestern Iowa, but in Arizona their home range swells to over 2 acres (0.81 ha) after chicks fledge. These territories shift with the seasons yet remain statistically unchanged (p>0.05). which can walk and swim short distances (< 3 ft or 0.91 m) by the end of their first day.
When water rises over 8 in (20 cm) in a Colorado pond, a nest holding seven eggs is abandoned, showing how tightly soras tie reproduction to water depth. Their nests sit in water as shallow as 4 in (10 cm) in Colorado and up to nearly 10 in (25 cm) in western New York. By nesting in these shallow margins, soras keep eggs dry yet hidden, but sudden floods can wipe out an entire clutch, underscoring the fragility of wetland breeding sites.
Soras begin their northward spring migration in early April, with a surge of detections from 24 April to 7 May in east-central Kansas (p<0.05). They then start the long southward trek as early as July, some leaving breeding grounds by late July and arriving on wintering sites by August-September.
Adult soras fit in the palm of your hand, measuring just 19-30 cm (7.5-11.8 in) long and weighing only 49-112 g (1.7-4.0 oz). Their wingspan stretches a modest 35-40 cm, yet they pack a loud, descending whinny that echoes across marshes.
Soras thrive best in marshes that are neither too tiny nor too massive: densities peak in 100-250-acre (40-101 ha) wetlands, while both smaller (< 100 acre) and larger (250-380 acre) sites host fewer birds.
