• Male cinnamon teals are the only duck species in the Americas where the male is more colourful than the female — a rust-red body that looks airbrushed onto a canvas of shallow marshes. This reversal of the usual rule (where bright plumage costs males survival) hints that cinnamon teals nest in safer habitats where males don't need camouflage, freeing them to advertise their fitness with colour.
• A cinnamon teal's bill is longer and flatter than other dabbling ducks, a shape that evolved to sift through ooze and silt like a living strainer. They filter-feed on insects, crustaceans, and seeds while wading in water barely deep enough to cover their legs — they can find food in puddles where other ducks starve. This tool let them colonise some of the harshest wetlands in South America.
• Cinnamon teals migrate in split populations: birds in North America fly south in autumn, but birds breeding in the Andes and Patagonia stay put year-round, never leaving their lakes.
