Fascinating facts about the Snow leopard

• A snow leopard's tail is nearly as long as its body — up to 1 metre of pure insulation and balance. When it wraps that tail around itself in the high Himalayas, where temperatures plunge to –40°C, the fur density there is so thick that skin underneath never touches the air. It's a living sleeping bag that also acts as a rudder when leaping across 15-metre chasms between rocky peaks.
• Their paws are evolved snowshoes: each foot has fur-covered undersides and toe pads that expand and contract like suction cups, giving them grip on ice and silent stalking ability on loose scree. A snow leopard can move across slopes so steep that a human mountaineer would need ropes and pitons — and it does it at night, hunting by the stars and their own night vision.
• Snow leopards almost never roar. Instead, they communicate with a sound called a 'prusten' — a stuttering breath that echoes across valleys and is audible up to 300 metres away. A mother uses it to call cubs, a male to announce territory, and a solitary animal to find a mate across mountains where sight lines are blocked by ridges. In their world of thin air and stone, sound travels farther than you'd expect.
• There are only 4,080–6,590 snow leopards left in the wild, scattered across 2.3 million square kilometres of mountain range from Kazakhstan to western China. A single leopard's territory can span 1,000 square kilometres — larger than Singapore — because prey is so sparse at altitudes above 3,000 metres. Each animal is essentially invisible in census work; scientists often track them by counting pug marks in snow, a method that only works in winter.
• Their hunting success rate sits at roughly 1 kill per 10 to 20 stalks — far lower than a lion or tiger. But snow leopards have evolved to eat slowly: a single kill of a blue sheep can sustain one leopard for two weeks, meaning they need only 10–15 large meals per year. This solitary hunter has turned scarcity into survival, turning the highest, harshest mountains on Earth into a fortress where few predators compete.
