• A snow goose can fly 3,000 km non-stop from the Arctic to Texas — and do it twice a year. They don't rest mid-journey; instead, they enter a state of unihemispheric sleep where half their brain sleeps while the other half stays alert for predators. Over a 25-year lifespan, a single goose logs roughly 150,000 km of migration, equivalent to circling Earth four times.
• Snow geese come in two colours — pure white and dark blue-grey — yet they're the same species. The blue form was so rare in the 1800s that ornithologists thought it was a separate bird. Today, blue snow geese outnumber white ones across much of their range. Scientists still don't fully understand why both forms exist or why one has become dominant.
• A breeding pair will return to the exact same pond in the Arctic every spring, sometimes within days of the same date they arrived the previous year.
