Adult macaroni penguins tip the scales at about 5.5 kg (12 lb) and stand 70 cm (28 in) tall, but individuals swing widely with males ranging from 3.3 kg after incubating to 6.4 kg before moult and females from 3.2 kg to 5.7 kg. Their thick orange-brown bills measure 7-8 cm, while the wing spans roughly 20.4 cm. This size flexibility lets them store fat for the three-to-four-week, food-free moult and survive long foraging trips, linking body condition directly to breeding success.
Macaroni penguins gulp more marine life than any other seabird, devouring an estimated 9.2 million tonnes of krill each year, with krill making up over 90 % of their diet during breeding. Their foraging dives usually hit 15-70 m, occasionally reaching 100 m, and they can catch 4-16 krill per dive.
With roughly 18 million mature individuals, macaroni penguins form the world's most numerous penguin species, yet their colonies can swell to 100,000 birds in a single rookery, making them among the densest seabird gatherings. Since the mid-1970s their numbers have slipped, prompting a Vulnerable IUCN rating.
A 2009 tracking study showed macaroni penguins from Kerguelen sailing more than 10,000 km (6,200 mi) across the central Indian Ocean, while earlier work by Charles Andre Bost recorded a dispersal area exceeding 3 million km² for the same colony. These epic voyages keep the birds in the krill-poor Polar Frontal Zone for months.
South Georgia, a key breeding hub for macaroni penguins, was declared rodent-free after the world's largest eradication project removed invasive rats and mice from 1,087 km² (420 sq mi). The island hosts millions of breeding birds, including the macaroni, and the removal of predators that ate eggs and chicks removes a major threat.
