In eastern Canada they take to the night sky from June through September, while populations further south squeeze in extra life cycles: New Jersey moths produce two generations each year, and Louisiana moths manage four.
• James Edward Smith first gave this moth a scientific name in 1797, placing it in the hawk-moth family.
• The small-eyed sphinx inhabits a massive swath of North America, from the Atlantic-coast forests of southeastern Canada down to the subtropical wetlands of Florida, and it pushes almost to the Pacific shoreline, even spilling into Mexico.
