• When a Bornean orangutan mother gives birth, she spends 6–7 years teaching her offspring everything: which of 400+ plant species are safe to eat, how to build a fresh sleeping nest every single night, how to navigate 50 metres through the canopy without falling. A human child is independent by 18. An orangutan isn't ready to leave home until they're teenagers. That slow childhood is why a female produces only 3–4 offspring in her entire lifetime — fewer than almost any land mammal her size.
• An adult male Bornean orangutan can weigh 100 kg and pull with a force of 500 kg using just his arm. His body is built like a gymnast: arms 7 cm longer than his legs, fingers that curve into permanent hooks, a grip strength that lets him support his full weight on a single hand while reaching for fruit with the other. This isn't strength for fighting — it's strength for living in trees where a slip means death.
• A Bornean orangutan's diet shifts with the forest's calendar. When the trees fruit, they eat fruit (up to 90% of their diet). When fruit disappears, they switch to leaves, bark, insects, and soil — sometimes travelling 2 km a day to find enough food. During lean seasons they move slower, rest more, and build nests closer to fruiting trees they can reach quickly. The forest's abundance or scarcity literally rewrites their behaviour month to month.
• In the last 20 years, Borneo has lost 30% of its rainforest — roughly the size of Belgium. Bornean orangutan populations have crashed from around 20,000 to just 7,000–10,000. Unlike gorillas in protected reserves, orangutans live in forests that are actively being cleared for palm oil and logging, meaning a young male orangutan today has almost no chance of encountering an unrelated female to breed with. Population collapse isn't a future risk; it's happening now.
• A captive Bornean orangutan named Aping learned to use a computer touchscreen and understand symbols representing objects and actions — demonstrating he could think about things that weren't physically present. In the wild, orangutans use tools (stripping bark, making sponges from leaves), teach these skills to their young, and pass knowledge down generations like culture. They are solitary thinkers in a way that mirrors human intelligence, which makes their habitat erasure feel less like ecological loss and more like watching a library burn.
