• The silvery checkerspot is a North American Nymphalinae butterfly that has been given special-concern status in Connecticut and Maine. Conservation authorities also consider it extirpated in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, meaning it no longer occurs there. Its overall distribution stretches from southern Canada down to Georgia, Florida and Texas, showing how its loss is confined to the far-northeast.
• In the deep southern part of Texas, silvery checkerspots can produce three broods each year. This additional generation extends the breeding season into the hotter months, allowing the species to exploit the long growing period of its host plants. The extra brood is recorded only in that specific region, showing a clear geographic variation in reproductive timing.
• Female silvery checkerspots lay their eggs in batches that may contain up to one hundred eggs at a time.
• Young silvery checkerspot caterpillars move together in tight groups, chewing the leaf tissue until only the veins remain.
