Fascinating facts about the Siberian Weasel
- In winter the Siberian weasel's coat becomes exceptionally dense, soft and fluffy, a result of guard hairs that grow to three to four centimetres long. Beneath these long guards the underfur is described as dense and loosely fitting, adding to the overall plush texture. The species' tail is not only brighter in colour than its back but also noticeably fluffier than the tails of other Mustela members, enhancing its striking winter appearance.
- Siberian weasels dig extensive burrow systems that can stretch up to four point two metres in length and reach depths of one point three metres. An adult maintains a permanent den together with up to five additional shelters, each of which may lie several kilometres apart, allowing the animal to move across its territory.
- Each adult Siberian weasel keeps a permanent den as a home base and supplements it with up to five further shelters scattered across its range. These auxiliary shelters can be located several kilometres away, giving the animal flexibility to hunt and avoid predators.
- Siberian weasels frequently enter the roosts of domesticated fowl and pigeons, sometimes killing more birds than they can eat. This behavior damages poultry and muskrat farms.
- When a Siberian weasel is caught in a trap it reacts violently, emitting high-pitched shrieks that can be heard nearby. At the same time it releases a strong, pungent secretion that can linger on clothing or equipment for several days before it can be washed away. Hunters therefore often combine trapping with other methods such as shooting the animal with dogs or using box traps to increase success.
