• The shadow darner can stay aloft in temperatures that would ground most other dragonflies because it actively regulates its body heat. This thermal control lets it continue hunting throughout a long flight season that runs from late April to November. Its extreme cold tolerance means it can patrol the edges of marshy streams even on chilly mornings when prey are still active. By remaining airborne while others are grounded, it exploits a niche few insects can reach.
• Shadow darners are most often seen flying at dusk and in deep shade, lingering longer into autumn than almost any other dragonfly. They hunt in the dim light of forest edges, marshy streams and slow ponds, persisting later into the fall than all species except the yellow-legged meadowhawk. Their preference for shaded habitats allows them to exploit insect prey that are active in low-light conditions.
• When the shadow darner nymph is ready to become an adult, it emerges under the cover of night rather than in daylight. This nocturnal emergence likely evolved to reduce the risk of being eaten by daytime predators that hunt around water. The timing allows the freshly emerged adult to dry its wings and take flight before many visual hunters become active. Consequently, the species gains a survival advantage during this vulnerable transition.
• The shadow darner's aquatic larva is a sizable predator, measuring 38 to 43 mm long, and it hunts a broad range of prey such as mosquito and mayfly larvae, freshwater shrimp, small fish and tadpoles. It moves through water by jet propulsion, forcefully expelling water from the ends of its abdomen to dart after food. This rapid swimming makes the naiad an active predator, and it may spend several years growing before emerging as an adult.
