Fascinating facts about the Sechuran Fox
- A recent 2022 study places the total number of Sechuran foxes at roughly five thousand individuals, indicating a very limited population. This small number makes the species especially vulnerable to human activities that alter its environment. The chief dangers come from habitat loss due to deforestation and, to a lesser extent, hunting, both of which are driven by anthropogenic pressures.
- The Sechuran fox is diminutive even among canids, weighing between 2.6 and 4.2 kg and measuring 50 to 78 cm from head to body, with a tail that adds another 27 to 34 cm. These dimensions make it the smallest member of the Lycalopex genus. Unlike its relatives, its fur never displays the typical red colour found elsewhere in the group, remaining a grey-agouti shade with lighter underparts.
- The species is believed to endure long periods without drinking, drawing the water it needs from the moisture contained in its prey and the sparse vegetation it consumes. This adaptation is inferred from the extreme aridity of its desert and coastal habitats, where free water is rarely available. Such a capacity for water independence is unusual among mammals, giving the fox a distinct survival edge in its dry environment.
- The Sechuran fox moves seeds across the landscape by eating fruit such as the pods of Prosopis juliflora and the berries of Cordia and mito plants, then excreting the viable seeds far from the parent. This behaviour allows it to spread plant species as widely as more specialised dispersers, for example phyllostomid bats and white-tailed deer. By doing so it contributes to the regeneration of the desert scrub that dominates its arid coastal and foothill habitat.
