• A periwinkle's tongue is a ribbon of 200 teeth arranged in 120 rows — it scrapes rock like a living file, wearing down roughly 0.5 mm of stone every year. When a periwinkle dies, its radula (that's the technical name) is sometimes more durable than the shell itself. Scientists use fossilised radulae to track periwinkle species back 500 million years.
• Common periwinkles survived the last ice age by clustering under rocks in a state near-death: their metabolism drops so low that a single breath can last six months. When the ice retreated 10,000 years ago, they crawled back across the Atlantic seabed and recolonised the entire North Atlantic coast in just a few thousand years — one of the fastest post-glacial range expansions ever measured in a marine snail.
