• A scrub hare can hit 60 km/h in a zigzag sprint — faster than a greyhound — and uses a trick most hares do not: it stops dead, doubles back on its own tracks, then explodes sideways into the bush. Predators (jackals, eagles, snakes) chase the scent trail straight past the hare's new hiding spot. This jink-and-vanish tactic works so well that scrub hares survive in open savanna where other hares would be sitting targets.
• Unlike rabbits, which are born blind and naked in underground burrows, scrub hares are born fully furred with open eyes in a shallow scrape in the grass — a single leveret per birth. Within hours it can run. Within days it forages alone while the mother hides elsewhere. This strategy trades parental care for speed: a hare baby must be independent or dead within a week.
• A scrub hare's ears are heat radiators. Blood vessels flood the thin, translucent ears to dump excess body warmth into the African air, especially during the day when they rest in shallow forms (grass beds). In winter, those same ears constrict to conserve warmth. They are living thermostats, shaped by thousands of years in an unforgiving savanna.
• Scrub hares are almost entirely nocturnal — they emerge after dark to feed on grasses, leaves, and bark — but they've evolved to see equally well in starlight as in daylight. Their eyes contain a high ratio of rod cells (which detect movement and dim light) to cone cells, making them as sensitive to a single photon as a barn owl's. They hunt for food in near-total darkness with the confidence of daylight grazers.
• In droughts, scrub hares can survive on moisture alone by eating succulent leaves and roots, extracting water that other savanna herbivores cannot access. They also concentrate their urine to near-crystal form, losing barely 1% of their body water per day. When grasshoppers swarm after rains, hares shift diet to catch protein where vegetation fails. This dietary flexibility is why they persist across sub-Saharan Africa while more specialized grass-eaters vanish.
