• The scarlet ibis is the only wading bird that displays a true red plumage, a distinction that sets it apart from all its shore-dwelling relatives. Adults are covered almost entirely in vivid scarlet feathers, with only the longest wing primaries showing a blackish tip. Juveniles hatch grey-brown and acquire their brilliant colour after a heavy diet of red crustaceans, a change that begins at the second moult and intensifies over about two years.
