• A scarlet ibis chick is born grey, not red. The transformation takes 2–3 years and happens through diet alone — the birds convert carotenoid pigments from the shrimp and crabs they eat into their feathers, the same way flamingos turn pink. Stop feeding them red food and the colour fades within months. Their brilliance is literally what they eat.
• Scarlet ibises roost in colonies of up to 10,000 birds, all packed into a single tree. At dusk, they arrive in waves — a living sunset descending on the mangrove. This isn't random crowding; they sleep standing on one leg, tucking their head over their shoulder, and the packed formation shields them from predators and wind. Safety through sheer numbers.
• Their curved bill is a precision tool with a built-in pressure sensor at the tip. As they probe into mud and shallow water, they don't see their prey — they feel it. The moment a shrimp or small crab touches the bill's inner surface, the bird's beak snaps shut in 15 milliseconds, faster than you can blink.
