• When the breeding season arrives, the heron builds a modest 20-30 cm wide, 3-4 cm high stick platform that cradles a clutch of two to five pale green-blue eggs. Each egg averages 51.5 mm long by 37.2 mm wide. Parents share a 21-day incubation, then raise altricial chicks that stay in the nest for about two weeks before venturing out, finally leaving the nest at six to seven weeks old.
• Almost fully nocturnal, the nankeen night heron slips from its daytime roost just after sunset and stays active until dawn, hunting in the dark. In Australia, many adults become partially migratory, moving with winter rains or floods. Some travel north to Papua New Guinea, while others reach New Zealand and distant islands like Christmas Island, Lord Howe Island, and Cocos-Keeling Island.

Later, in 1817, the bird was reassigned to the genus Nycticorax, a name rooted in ancient Greek for "night raven." This taxonomic journey reflects centuries of exploration and the shifting understanding of night-heron relationships.
