When the scaled dove takes off its wings create a sharp rattling noise that locals compare to the rattle of a snake. In the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Pernambuco this sound, together with the bird's scaly plumage, has earned it the nickname rolinha-cascavel, literally "rattlesnake".
A key field mark of the scaled dove is the bright white spot that appears on its folded wings. This spot is created by the distal wing coverts, which are white and become visible when the bird's wings are closed. Observers can use this conspicuous marking to confirm identification without needing to see the bird in flight, as the spot stands out against the otherwise brown plumage.
The scaled dove constructs a cup-shaped nest from twigs, typically positioning it one to two metres above the ground but occasionally opting for a ground site when suitable. Each clutch consists of two white eggs.
The scaled dove is largely silent, vocalising only while perched in concealed spots, and the only regular sound most hear is the noise of its wings during take-off. It moves in pairs or small groups along the edges of forests, savannahs and orchards, deliberately avoiding very open or very closed habitats.
Birdwatchers and ornithologists in São Paulo have reported a decline in scaled dove numbers, suspecting that the expanding eared dove is outcompeting it as the latter's range and abundance increase. This concern persists even though the species can become comfortable near humans in cities such as Brasília or Goiânia, where it forages on sidewalks like its congener the ruddy ground-dove.
