Fascinating facts about the Sacred Kingfisher
- From August to March the pair can raise two broods, each clutch holding 3 to 6 glossy white eggs that are just 25 mm × 22 mm. Both parents share a 17-18-day incubation, then feed hatchlings for up to four weeks before fledging, and even keep provisioning for another 7-10 days.
- The sacred kingfisher's diet reads like a pantry of the forest floor: insects, spiders, small crustaceans, occasional fish, frogs, tiny rodents and reptiles, and even the occasional finch. It hunts by perching on a low branch, then either sally-pouncing or hovering to snatch prey, before beating it on the perch to kill and swallow. It occurs in habitats ranging from mangroves to suburban gardens.
