- Four dams have created permanent water bodies that stay ice-covered longer, which lets the russet ground squirrel cross the Volga where it could not before. These icy corridors open a new steppe passage into areas that were previously isolated. The species is also spreading southward and westward as roads and other developments add water channels and tall grasses, further expanding its range.
- Female russet ground squirrels carry their litters for roughly twenty-three days before giving birth, usually to seven or eight pups. The newborns grow extremely quickly, reaching full size in just two and a half months. Such rapid development allows the young to become independent well before the next hibernation cycle begins, supporting the species' ability to rebound after population troughs.
- When spring finally thaws the steppe, russet ground squirrels emerge from their long hibernation after a pause of six and a half to eight and a half months. The exact day they surface is not fixed; it shifts according to how quickly the ground warms and can differ by as much as twenty-five days.
- Russet ground squirrels construct permanent burrows that reach roughly one metre below the surface and feature a straight vertical entrance. Inside, the tunnel system extends to about two metres in total length, while their temporary burrows are shallower, have slanted entryways and are more simply constructed.
