Rock Kestrel

Fascinating facts about the Rock Kestrel

• A bird that barely spans a ruler, just 30 to 33 cm tall, still weighs 183 g to 254 g in males and 190 g to 280 g in females.
• When the wind reaches a brisk pace, this raptor can hover with minimal wing flapping, using updrafts to scan for insects, a hunting style that lets it snatch prey mid-air.
• In the savanna, it sometimes shadows baboon troops, waiting for the large primates to stir up insects, then darts in to grab the fleeing bugs, a clever partnership that turns a monkey’s foraging into a feast.
• A single breeding season can produce anywhere from one to six eggs, with the mother sitting on them nonstop for 26 to 32 days, while the father hustles to bring food, a teamwork model that ensures chick survival.
• After hatching, chicks cling to the nest for another 31 to 39 days before venturing out, yet they often linger nearby for weeks, a strategy that keeps the family unit intact while the young learn to hunt on their own.
