The roadside hawk thrives in towns and large cities across its range, making it a familiar sight from Mexico down to Argentina. It is common throughout its range, inhabiting most ecosystems except dense rainforests, and occasional individuals wander as far north as Texas. When it builds a nest high in a tree it can become very defensive, even striking people who come too close.
Measuring just 31-41 cm in length and weighing 250-300 g, the roadside hawk is the tiniest member of the widespread Buteo genus. Males are about 20 % smaller than females, yet both sexes share the same striking plumage pattern. Its short wings and relatively long tail give it a distinctive silhouette in flight, setting it apart from larger relatives. No other Buteo species is smaller, with only Ridgway's and white-rumped hawks approaching its size.
The roadside hawk's diet is diverse, centred on insects, squamates and small mammals, and it regularly captures young common marmosets and other tiny primates. Small birds are also taken, though far less often than by larger generalist hawks such as the white-tailed hawk. This opportunistic feeding habit allows it to exploit a wide range of prey in open cerrado and forest edges.
When it darts through open cerrado, mixed-species feeding flocks barely flinch, watching it only to keep it at bay, treating it like the much smaller American kestrel. They see it as little more than a minor nuisance.
The hawk favours a patient "still hunting" style, perching motionless for long spells before swooping down on unsuspecting prey. Most attempts are successful through this technique.
