Fascinating facts about the Red Kangaroo
- The red kangaroo is the biggest kangaroo and the largest native terrestrial mammal in Australia, as well as the largest living marsupial. Adult males reach a head-and-body length of 1.3-1.6 m and a tail that adds another 1.2 m, giving a total length of up to 2.8 m. They typically stand about 1.5 m tall, but the largest recorded male was 2.1 m tall and weighed 91 kg, roughly twice the weight of females which range from 18 to 40 kg.
- Red kangaroos enjoy an almost panoramic visual field, seeing roughly 300° around them and up to 324° when the slight 25° overlap of the two eyes is counted. This wide angle is a direct result of the lateral placement of their eyes on the head. Such a field lets them detect predators or rivals from almost any direction while grazing in open habitats. The extensive sight is especially useful during their crepuscular and nocturnal activity periods.
- When food is abundant, red kangaroos can gather in massive congregations of up to 1,500 individuals, forming some of the largest single-species groups in the Australian outback. These gatherings occur in areas with plentiful forage, where the animals can feed together while remaining mostly crepuscular and nocturnal, resting in shade during the day.
- A female can remain continuously pregnant, pausing an embryo while another joey nurses, so up to three generations coexist at once. Mothers may have a young-at-foot, a pouch joey, and a blastula in arrested development simultaneously.
