• Males spend weeks each spring transforming their heads from drab brown to brilliant crimson — a colour change so dramatic it fooled ornithologists into thinking they'd discovered a new species. This isn't a gradual fade; the red feathers grow in densely packed, almost overnight, signalling a male ready to breed. By summer, that scarlet crown is gone again, and he reverts to brown. Few ducks undergo such a complete seasonal costume swap.
• A pochard's feet are positioned so far back on its body that walking on land looks comically unstable — because it nearly is. Evolution optimised them for diving, not waddling. This rear-leg setup makes them among the deepest diving ducks in Europe, able to reach 5 metres down to uproot aquatic plants. The trade-off: they can barely walk, and must launch themselves into water to take off.
• When a female lays her clutch of 8–12 eggs, she vanishes from the nest for stretches of 10–15 hours at a time, leaving her eggs unattended. This extreme negligence works because pochard nests are hidden so well — usually in dense reeds or rushes — that predators rarely find them. Incubation takes 24–28 days, and once chicks hatch, the mother leads them to open water within days, where safety lies in numbers and depth.
• Red-crested pochards gather in winter flocks that can exceed 10,000 birds on a single lake, creating one of Europe's most concentrated duck aggregations. These massive congregations form a living insurance policy: with thousands of eyes scanning for danger, individual birds can rest and feed with lower vigilance. A single lake in Spain or Hungary might hold more of this species than exist in all of Britain.
• Climate change is reshaping where this duck can survive. Warming winters have shifted their migration patterns northward and eastward — birds that once wintered in Africa are now staying in Europe, where milder conditions mean less ice. This sounds beneficial, but it concentrates populations into shrinking wetlands and creates new bottlenecks. The species' range is rewriting itself in real time, a living map of how fast ecosystems respond to heat.
