• A red bush squirrel's tail is longer than its entire body — up to 25 cm of pure balance organ. Every leap through the forest canopy, that tail whips like a living counterweight, letting them twist mid-air and land on branches thinner than a pencil. It's also their emergency brake: when falling, they flatten it like a parachute. Without it, they'd crash.
• They scatter-hoard thousands of seeds across kilometres of forest each year, and they forget where most of them are buried. But here's the trick: the seeds they do lose germinate into new trees. Red bush squirrels are unwitting foresters — in African woodlands where fire destroys competing plants, their forgotten caches create the next generation of forest.
• A red bush squirrel's teeth never stop growing, so they gnaw constantly just to keep them sharp and short. Their front teeth (incisors) can exert a bite force of 22,000 pounds per square inch — enough to splinter the hardest seed shells in seconds.
