Red-breasted Parakeet

Fascinating facts about the Red-breasted Parakeet

• When Carl Linnaeus first listed the red-breasted parakeet in 1758, he placed it in the catch-all genus Psittacus, but a French naturalist split it into the slimmer-sounding Psittacula just 42 years later in 1800. That taxonomic reshuffle reflects how early scientists grappled with the sheer variety of parrots across Asia.
• Eight recognized subspecies of Psittacula alexandri pepper the map from north India to the tiny islands off Sumatra, each named by different ornithologists between 1776 and 1962. The “moustached” label sticks to those island races, while the mainland form stretches along the Himalayan foothills. This patchwork of races makes the red-breasted parakeet the most geographically varied member of its genus, reminding us that even a single bird species can hold a miniature evolutionary museum.
• The nominate race that inhabits Java, Bali and south Borneo is now described as “close to extinction,” a stark contrast to its cousins thriving on distant islands. While the exact numbers aren’t given, the phrase signals an urgent decline, likely tied to habitat loss and capture for the wild-bird trade. It warns that even the most widespread species can teeter on the brink when one key population disappears.
• Feral flocks have taken over bustling metros like Mumbai and Singapore, turning city parks into unexpected parakeet playgrounds. Smaller groups have been spotted in Chennai and Bangalore, showing the bird’s knack for adapting to human-dominated landscapes. Their urban success hints that some wildlife can carve out niches beside us, even as their wild relatives face trade pressures.
• One subspecies lives solely on the Andaman Islands, another on the Karimunjawa chain north of central Java, and yet another on the Kangean Islands north of Bali, each confined to small islands.
