• Unlike almost every other duck in North America, the mottled duck never migrates — not even when ice locks the Gulf Coast marshes where it was born. This 600-gram dabbler has stayed put in the same southeastern wetlands for thousands of years, making it one of the few truly non-migratory ducks on the continent. Evolution built it for a single home rather than a journey.
• Male and female mottled ducks look nearly identical — a rarity in the duck world where males usually flash bright plumage to impress. Both sexes wear the same dappled brown and buff feathers, making them cryptic enough to vanish into marsh vegetation. This visual equality hints at a partnership: they stay together for the entire breeding season, 4–5 months of shared parenting instead of the male abandoning the nest.

Conservation scientists track DNA markers to protect the bloodline before the original genotype disappears into hybrid fog.
• This duck eats mostly plants — sedges, widgeon grass, and aquatic seeds — making it a living lawnmower for coastal marshes. By grazing on vegetation and stirring up mud while foraging, mottled ducks inadvertently engineer the wetlands they live in, controlling plant growth and releasing nutrients that feed the entire food web their own ducklings depend on.
