• At 3.3 centimetres long and 1.5 grams, the Pygmy White-toothed Shrew is the world's smallest mammal by length — smaller than your thumb, lighter than a penny. To stay alive, it must eat nearly its entire body weight in insects every single day, hunting at a frantic pace because its metabolism burns through fuel so fast that it would starve in just 15 minutes without food. This extreme hunger makes it one of nature's most aggressive predators, relative to its size.
• A shrew's heart beats up to 1,350 times per minute — faster than a hummingbird's, faster than almost any other vertebrate on Earth. At rest its brain consumes 10% of its total energy budget, three times the proportion humans spend thinking. Shrivel this body any smaller and the laws of physics say the brain couldn't work anymore.
• Shrews navigate and hunt almost entirely by sound, producing ultrasonic clicks above human hearing range and listening for echoes bouncing off insects in the dark. This biological sonar is crude compared to a bat's, but in the low-light Mediterranean scrub where these shrews live, it's accurate enough to catch prey moving in leaf litter they cannot see.
• Female shrews give birth to litters of 5–8 babies after just 27–28 days of pregnancy — the shortest gestation of any mammal except the Virginia opossum.
