• Living in the dense, flooded lowland forests of the northwestern Amazon, the western pygmy marmoset relies heavily on sound to stay in contact with its group. When a neighbour is close, it exchanges rapid trills that can be heard up to nine metres away, but beyond twenty metres it switches to a lower-frequency J call that carries farther through the thick vegetation.
• Within a group, the dominant female can control the reproductive output of subordinates by releasing pheromonal signals that block luteinising hormone secretion, causing ovulatory failure in lower-ranking females. This hormonal suppression is not absolute; when a subordinate does manage to conceive, the dominant may resort to infanticide, killing the offspring to maintain her reproductive monopoly.
• The western pygmy marmoset's diet is centred on tree exudates such as sap, gum, resin and latex, which it obtains by actively gouging holes in bark with its specialised teeth. These dental adaptations, evolved for gum-feeding, enable the animal to stimulate fluid flow and harvest the nutritious sap.
• The western pygmy marmoset's tail is marked with distinctive black rings and measures about 20 cm, which makes it longer than the animal's body. An adult's body length averages 13 cm, so the tail adds a noticeable extension for balance and agility in the canopy. This proportionally long tail aids the monkey's characteristic upside-down and under-branch locomotion, allowing it to cling and swing efficiently among thin branches.
• Litters of western pygmy marmosets commonly contain fraternal twins, a regular reproductive pattern for the species. Newborns are unusually small for the length of gestation, reflecting a slow in-utero growth rate. The group's dominant female can further limit breeding by emitting pheromonal signals that suppress luteinising hormone in subordinate females, sometimes preventing ovulation altogether.
