• A bird no bigger than your thumb migrates 5,000 km twice a year between North American swamps and South American rainforests — crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single 20-hour flight on fuel reserves no heavier than a paperclip. Prothonotary warblers weigh 12 grams. Their brain is the size of a pea, yet it holds a map of two continents.
• Male prothonotary warblers build up to a dozen dummy nests before a female arrives, each one a decoy in a different tree cavity. She inspects every one. Scientists still don't know why males build these fakes — perhaps to prove their construction skills, perhaps to hedge against predators finding the real nest.
