Fascinating facts about the Pond Slider

• The name 'slider' comes from the turtle's rapid escape response: when startled it darts off a basking perch and plunges back into the water. Pond sliders often sun themselves on logs, branches or vegetation that may be at or even well above the water's surface.
• When pond sliders colonise new waters they often outcompete native turtles for the limited sunny spots needed for thermoregulation. Their presence forces indigenous species to abandon basking sites, reducing access to essential warmth. In addition to stealing these perches they also vie for food and habitat, intensifying pressure on local turtles. This aggressive displacement is a hallmark of their invasive impact.
• While seeking warmth, pond sliders sometimes choose bird nests as basking platforms, and the weight of the turtle can crush the eggs beneath. This behaviour directly reduces the reproductive success of nesting birds. The turtles also take advantage of the proximity to prey on fledgling birds that leave the nest. Such interactions illustrate the broader ecological disruption they cause when introduced.
• The European Union has placed the pond slider on its Invasive Alien Species of Union concern list. It has been on that list since 2016, meaning strict rules apply across all member states. Under the regulation the turtle may not be imported, bred, transported, sold or deliberately released anywhere in the EU. These prohibitions aim to stop further spread and protect native wildlife.
• The commercial boom began in the early 1900s when large numbers of pond sliders were captured for sale. By the 1950s the industry was mass-producing the turtles, with millions being farmed and exported worldwide as pets. Those exported individuals escaped or were released, and over the following decades the species established populations far beyond its native range.
