Red-bellied Black Snake

Fascinating facts about the Red-bellied Black Snake

• A 2 m (6 ft 7 in) specimen once caught near Newcastle tipped the scales at about 10 kg (22 lb), showing how massive a red-bellied black snake can get compared with its average 1.25 m length.
• When threatened, this snake can stay underwater for up to 23 minutes, holding its nostrils above the surface like a submarine predator. This ability lets it escape land-based danger and hunt frogs hiding among submerged logs.
• Males have been recorded travelling 1,220 m (0.76 mi) in a single day during the spring mating rush, a marathon compared with their typical 0.02–40 ha home ranges.
• A single bite yields on average 37 mg of venom, with a maximum of 94 mg, yet no deaths have been recorded among the 16% of Australian snakebite cases between 2005 and 2015. The relatively mild venom still causes severe local damage, reminding us that bite outcomes depend on more than just toxicity.
• After 75 years of exposure to invasive cane toads, populations of this snake have evolved increased resistance to the toad’s toxins and now avoid eating them. This rapid adaptation highlights how wildlife can shift physiologically in response to human-introduced threats.
