• A caterpillar that eats poison and wears it like armour — the Polydamas swallowtail larva gorges on pipevine leaves packed with aristolochic acid, a toxin that would kill most insects. Instead of dying, the caterpillar stockpiles the poison in its body, then advertises the fact with bold yellow and black stripes. Birds learn fast: one peck of a toxic caterpillar, and they avoid anything with that warning pattern for life.
• The adults are counterfeit-proof. Viceroy and Monarch butterflies mimic each other to gain protection, but the Polydamas swallowtail doesn't need to impersonate anyone — it's the blueprint that others copy.
