- Viscacheras, the sprawling underground cities of plains viscachas, can sprawl across 600 sq m and sport 4-30 entrances, some wide enough for a person to stand waist-deep inside. These elaborate burrow networks protect colonies for decades, shielding them from predators. By engineering such massive shelters, viscachas create stable micro-habitats that support multiple generations.
- Plains viscachas live in tight-knit groups that can swell from a handful of individuals to several hundred, with typical communities of 15-30 and sometimes up to 50 members. These colonies are organized around a female-bonded core, while males rotate in and out each year.
- When viscachas settle near farms, they become unexpected hoarders, gathering brooms, tables, garden tools, firewood, trinkets, and even pieces of concrete to block burrow entrances. This behavior protects their homes but also turns them into agricultural pests, as their burrows can cause cattle to stumble and break bones, and their grazing raids crops. Yet humans have also harvested their meat and fur, showing a complex relationship that blends conflict with resource use.
- A single plains viscacha can tip the scales at nine kilograms, making it the heavyweight champion of its chinchilla family. Its body stretches over 500 mm from nose to tail base, while the fluffy tail adds just under 200 mm of length.
