• Pocket gophers are named for the fur-lined pouches in their cheeks that work like living grocery bags — they can stuff them so full their head doubles in width. These pouches are lined with their own skin, not connected to their mouth, and they can turn them inside-out to empty or clean them. A gopher might make 40 trips a day, each pouch holding enough roots and seeds to feed it for hours.
